On February 3rd in East Palestine, Ohio, around 50 train carts derailed carrying hazardous chemicals. To prevent an explosion, officials burned off the chemicals into the air, control released toxins into the soil, and ordered an evacuation.
“The EPA reports Materials have entered waterways near East Palestine, including Sulphur Run, Leslie Run, Bull Creek, North Fork Little Beaver Creek, Little Beaver Creek and the Ohio River, as well as storm drains, according to the agency.” – The Columbus Dispatch
Water servicing plants in Evansville and Louisville have made statements that they have not come across detectable amounts of toxic chemicals at this time.
The Ohio River feeds water to MANY regions, refer to the chart. If you live in one of these yellow areas, I would highly recommend continuing to read the article for how to support yourself & your family and stay up to date on this issue.

Air quality is also of concern. Toxic gasses travel by air. Mercury from power plants in China are being detected all the way in Seattle.
The EPA’s statements on February 12th when they were conducting air testing, “Air monitoring since the fire went out has not detected any levels of concern in the community that can be attributed to the incident at this time. For example, there have been some exceedances of PM2.5 screening values, but those are both upwind and downwind of the derailment site so likely had another cause. Residents may still smell odors from the site. If you experience symptoms, Columbiana County Health Department recommends calling your medical provider”
Just because a toxin is below the “hazardous limit” set by the EPA, DOES NOT MEAN IT’S NOT OF LONG TERM HEALTH CONCERN. The EPA sets standards for glycophosphate which we know is linked to many long term side effects.
Below is a list of the toxic chemicals that were on the train and are of concern in the water, air, and soil.
Vinyl Chloride:
- Breaks down into hydrochloric acid, formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and phosgene, a chemical weapon used during World War 1, according to the EPA and the CDC
Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether, Petroleum Lube Oil, Isobutylene, Butyl acrylates, Benzene

How to protect your family & support your body
Improve Air Quality
- HVAC filter
- Depending on the filters you buy, they need to be switched out every 1-6 months. Ensure this is happening and consider changing them more regularly
- Air purifier machines
Improve Water Quality
- Drinking water
- 5 gallon jug refills
- At the grocery store, you can buy 4-5 gallon jugs of water. When empty, refill them at the store. The filters, as long as properly maintained, filter to a very high quality water. This is what we currently do in my household
- Berky water filters
- Whole house water filter system
- 5 gallon jug refills
- Whole house water filtering systems
- Whole house water filtering systems can get very pricey depending on how much they filter out. For our family, we are opting for a system that will decrease chemicals, toxins, chlorine, etc, but not break the bank. We will still be drinking water that is filtered with reverse osmosis and uses UV rays. The system below will help us feel more confident with the water used for our dishes, clothes, showering, etc. It filters out VOCs (many chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc), heavy metal, sand, industrial solvents, and more.

- Under sink water filters
- Based on cost analysis, I would highly recommend a whole house watering system over under the sink. Below are options though.
- This water would be high quality enough for drinking
- Not great for drinking, but good to wash food, clean dishes, wash hands, etc.
- Shower filters
- I think a whole house filtration system is a better use of money, but here is a good option if a whole house system is outside of your budget

Detox Support
It’s really important to first and foremost, AVOID TOXINS! Clean up your cleaning products, makeup, shampoo, conditioner, etc. Plus limit processed food and food additives.
- Food
- Eat a whole food diet, limit processed foods
- Broccoli sprouts, eggs, bone broth, cooked beets, fermented foods, reishi mushroom, dandelion greens, bitter foods, and eating a variety of fibers can all support healthy detox
- Supplements
- THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, if you are interested in recommendations for your unique situation, apply for 1:1 coaching here. If not, please speak with your medical professional to see if there are any drug interactions before adding anything in
- Liposomal glutathione
- This is the body’s main antioxidant. Antioxidants combat free radicals, support inflammation, protect your DNA, and support healthy detox. Glutathione also helps the integrity of your brain and gut barrier lining
- My favorite brands are Seeking Health and Designs for Health
- Liver Support
- Some examples of compounds that support the liver:
- Dandelion
- Artichoke
- Milk thistle
- SAMe
- Choline
- Alpha lipoic acid
- NAC
- My favorite brands are Seeking Health’s liver support and Vital Nutrients liver support
- Some examples of compounds that support the liver:
- Sulforaphane
- Precursor for glutathione, better tolerated by some people. It’s the active compound in broccoli sprouts
- Omega 3’s (fish oil)
- Support inflammation
- Favorite brands: Patient One MediNutritionals & Designs for Health
Additional Support
- Castor oil packs
- Great and easy way to support liver detox
- Recommend 45min/day. Do not use while menstruating or pregnant
- These are the products I use:
- Sauna or hot baths
- Support daily bowel movements
- Toxins are released from our body through bowel movements, peeing, and sweating
We live 400miles away from the Ohio train derailment site and are taking the precautions discussed above. Some may say we’re hypochondriacs… but I take mine and my family’s health very seriously. I would rather err on the side of caution then end up with infertility, cancer, autoimmune diseases, respiratory problems, etc. Outside of this incident, we are exposed to toxic chemicals in microdoses on a daily basis… toxins that our ancestors were not exposed to and can cause a wide variety of health symptoms. Sometimes, your body will need additional support to help the massive undertaking of detoxification. Please speak with a medical professional and do your own research into what makes the most sense for you to do. This is not medical advice for you in particular as I do not know your unique history, exposure level, etc.
I’ll be continuing to send prayers to everyone impacted by the East Palestine train derailment.
